CCS in England not likely to make an impact until 2030

An article came out in Thursday’s edition of The Guardian carrying disappointing news of the effectiveness of CCS in British coal fired plants. The report by Centrica is  on British use of the CCS technology within their own country, and as it is regionally based it is not a clear reflection on use of CCS technology in our own country. Much like Canada though it seems CCS is all the rage in Britain despite the disappointing report.

This week, energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband confirmed reports in the Guardian that the government wanted to fund more than one CCS demonstration project to accelerate development of the technology. The government favours “post-combustion” technology which could be retrofitted to clean up existing coal plants to capture their emissions.
