Album review: Vusi Mahlasela’s “Say Africa”

Genre: World

From: Mamelodi Township, South Africa

FTWL: Louis Armstrong, gospel, good feelings, Putomayo compilations

Recommended tracks: Woza, Nakupenda Africa, Naka Mokhura

Peace oriented soulful South African folk, Mahlasela‘s Say Africa offers up soulful, beautiful afrakana music with lots of gospel, soul, jazz, and folk influences thrown in. An uplifting album with strong guitar folk sounds marrying his smooth, almost jazz like voice. The choral like harmonies combined with his precision guitar playing create a joyful soundtrack to life. Mixes of other instrumentation such as fiddles, drums, and banjo create a rich, textured sound.
